Further information on the grant decision process

What are grants awarded for?

  • research and the dissemination of research‑based knowledge
  • the organisation of forest‑related events for children and young people
  • small‑scale influencer and stakeholder communication and forest‑related events
  • the promotion of certification
  • the development of new operational models related to forestry or timber harvesting
  • the promotion of wood construction
  • domestic excursions and international study trips organised by student associations (grants are awarded to the organisation, not to individual students)
  • projects that promote interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration among students (grants are awarded to the organisation, not to individual students)

Examples of funded projects

The Finnish Forest Foundation may, for example, support the organisation of research seminars, the finalisation of publications, and the popularisation of scientific knowledge.

The Foundation aims to inspire schoolchildren to engage with forests and their use by supporting school forest excursions. In stakeholder communication, funding may cover the costs of events or excursions if media representatives or decision‑makers are involved.

For certification‑related projects, grants may be awarded, for example, for the development of training materials or for communicating impact‑related information. In forestry, timber harvesting, and wood construction, projects may include small‑scale pilots or survey‑based studies.

In student projects, grants may be awarded for domestic excursions and international study trips organised by student associations, as well as for projects that strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation (grants are awarded only to organisations).

How often can you receive a grant?

A grant may be awarded to the same applicant no more than once per year.

Funding Terms

These funding terms apply to all grants awarded by the Board of the Finnish Forest Foundation.

If there are any delays, changes in project personnel, or other significant changes in the implementation of the project, these must be reported without delay to the Finnish Forest Foundation. If the content of the project changes substantially, the Board of the Foundation may review and amend its decision. The Foundation has the right to reclaim the grant already paid if the conditions for the grant are no longer met.

The grant recipient commits to clearly acknowledging the Finnish Forest Foundation in the implementation of the project and in its final outputs. The Foundation’s logos must be used to the agreed extent and are available for download at metsasaatio.fi/yhteystiedot. The grant recipient also commits to acknowledging the Finnish Forest Foundation as a funder in social media and other communications, using the Foundation’s hashtags #metsäsäätiö and #metsäelinkeino.

The scope and methods of visibility will be agreed on a project‑by‑project basis between the grant recipient and the Foundation’s Managing Director after the grant decision has been made. If the Finnish Forest Foundation is not acknowledged as agreed, the Foundation has the right to withhold payment of the final instalment of the grant.

The grant recipient commits to submitting a final report on the project within one month of the project’s completion. The final report must be uploaded to the grant system and include the implementer’s self‑assessment of the project’s progress and the achievement of its objectives. The Foundation may publish the report on its website and use it in other communications.

The grant recipient accepts that the Finnish Forest Foundation may commission an audit to verify that the grant has been used appropriately and in accordance with the application. The Foundation will appoint the auditor and cover the costs of the audit.
