The Finnish Forest Foundation’s Grant Themes

The Finnish Forest Foundation funds projects that promote the vitality of the forest sector. Most grants are awarded for a one‑year period.
Projects may be local, regional or national in scope. The Foundation also supports international communication. Below is a brief overview of the main grant themes.

Children and Young People

The Forest Foundation supports forest education for young people by funding, among other things, forest days for schoolchildren and other ways of becoming familiar with forests and their use. In addition, transport grants can be applied for to support schoolchildren’s forest days and educational visits related to studies or careers within the forest sector.

Research and Science

The Forest Foundation funds research that promotes the forest sector, professorships, and the dissemination and application of research‑based knowledge. The aim is to provide scientifically grounded information to support decision‑making, particularly in matters related to forest ownership, wood construction, and the societal significance of the forest sector.

Stakeholder Communication

The Forest Foundation provides forest‑related information to decision‑makers and influencers from various sectors by funding initiatives such as the Decision‑Makers’ Forest Academy and communication projects. The aim is to increase awareness of the forest sector and its opportunities among decision‑makers and influencers, and to strengthen dialogue related to the use of forests.

Forest Nature Projects

The Forest Foundation awards grants to projects that support the conservation of forest biodiversity and climate action. The Foundation aims to encourage actors within the forest sector to take proactive measures through cooperation to promote forest biodiversity and climate work.

Other Grant‑Funded Projects

The Forest Foundation also funds projects that promote awareness of and expertise within the forest sector through communication, education and various events. Support may be directed to both local and national projects.

FAQ

When can I apply for a grant?

The Board of the Finnish Forest Foundation reviews applications for large grants (over EUR 5,000) twice a year. The first application round takes place in the spring, with decisions made in early summer. The second round is organised in the autumn. Detailed application schedules and thematic priorities are available on the Large Grants page.

Transport grants for schoolchildren and other small grants (under EUR 5,000) can be applied for throughout the year. These applications are processed within approximately three weeks.

Who can apply?

Anyone may apply for a grant if their proposed project or research supports the objectives of the Finnish Forest Foundation. The Foundation’s purpose is to promote the operating conditions for forestry, increase the use of wood and wood‑based products in Finland, and support scientific research within the forest sector. Grant applicants may be individuals, groups, companies, organisations, or other entities.

How is a grant application submitted?

The Finnish Forest Foundation uses a grant system through which all applications are processed. Grant applications are not accepted by email.

How often can a grant be applied for?

There are no limitations on how often large grants can be applied for. Transport grants for schoolchildren are generally granted once per year to the same school or class, and decisions are made on a case‑by‑case basis.

How large are transport grants for schoolchildren?

The amount of the transport grant depends on the travel distance and the number of pupils, and therefore the amounts may vary considerably. When assessing an application, the most important factors are that the excursion has been planned together with a forest professional and that the estimated transportation costs are reasonable.

Transport grants typically range from approximately one hundred euros to one thousand euros. For the application, a cost estimate must be requested from the transport provider. The Forest Foundation applies discretion when assessing the reasonableness of excursions, and a positive decision may cover transportation costs either fully or partially.

Why was my grant application not approved?

Most often, a negative decision is due to the project not sufficiently supporting the purpose of the Finnish Forest Foundation. It is important to note that not all strong projects can be funded, as the number of applications significantly exceeds the annual grant budget.

The Board of the Finnish Forest Foundation evaluates applications with a comprehensive view of the forest sector, and each application is reviewed carefully.

When will I receive a decision on my application?

Applicants are informed of the Board’s decisions as soon as possible after the decision‑making meeting. Transport grants for schoolchildren are processed as quickly as possible, usually within three weeks
